You hear it before you see it. Hundreds of all-terrain vehicles tearing across the desert, the roar of their engines echoing over the sand dunes. The noise goes all night long, making it impossible to grab any shuteye.

Not that anyone does.

“There is no sleep in Liwa,” says Ginger Krook, a 23-year-old motorsport enthusiast from the Netherlands. “It’s crazy.”

Each year, the Liwa International Festival draws crowds of car fanatics deep into the Empty Quarter, the vast desert stretching from the United Arab Emirates into Saudi Arabia.

Three hours’ drive from Abu Dhabi, the landscape is almost empty for most of the year, save for a new ribbon of blacktop and towering dunes.

In December, it becomes a dreamscape for motorheads.

“They come together and they drive,” says Krook, who plans to return for her fourth festival this December. “Everything you can think of related to off-road driving, you can find there.”

‘Full throttle or nothing’

Local Emiratis first recognized the motorsport potential of the Liwa Oasis more than two decades ago. They began gathering with their off-road vehicles at Moreeb Dune, the tallest in the region at more than 300 meters (about 1,000 feet). The challenge was simple: reach the top.

An official festival was created in 2004 and has grown steadily. In 2024, it drew more than 600,000 visitors, according to the event’s organizers. Alongside motorsports, a cultural program has taken shape, complete with fireworks each night.

But the central attraction — racing up the Moreeb Dune — remains the same.

“Everyone watches each other as they go up,” says Krook. “They are waiting for things to happen.”

Spectators cheer drivers on, but the dune is daunting. In Arabic, Moreeb means “terrifying.”

“If your tires are not big enough, your suspension is not good enough, you’re not able to come up,” she says. “You cannot be scared because it’s full throttle or nothing.”

Smaller, less terrifying dunes serve as obstacles in “dune-bashing” races, where cars and trucks dart and drift across the desert, leaving exhaust and plumes of sand in their wake.

It was “this kind of Mad Max-feeling city,” says Christian LeBlanc, 32, a Canadian influencer who attended last year. “There were these huge lights illuminating the dunes, and as we got closer you could see there were these (cars) driving up and down and up and down. When Ethan lost $11,000 on a single hockey game this past March, it was the last straw.

Ethan, who declined to share his last name out of fear of losing his job, bet “the spread’” on a Hurricanes-Flames hockey game. That means a team doesn’t just need to win – they must win by more than a certain number of points. The Hurricanes did come out on top – but by only one point, not the two-plus Ethan needed.

Ethan, 27, broke down and cried in front of his girlfriend. He couldn’t do it anymore.

What started as a casual hobby in college with his fraternity brothers had somehow escalated into a severe, years-long gambling addiction. And Ethan wanted out.

Although his story is extreme, Ethan is an example of an increasingly concerning trend.

A recent national survey of registered voters in the US conducted by Fairleigh Dickinson University found a quarter of men under 30 bet on sports online — and 10% of men ages 18-30 have a gambling problem, compared to just 3% of the overall population.

In that survey, 68% of people who bet on sports online reported at least one gambling behavior that’s considered harmful, such as borrowing money to gamble or saying the gambling has caused financial or emotional problems.

Dr. Timothy Fong, a UCLA psychiatry professor who is board-certified in addiction psychiatry, told CNN’s Nick Watt young people are particularly vulnerable to sports betting because their frontal lobes cannot yet handle impulsivity and risk-taking. Watt explores further on “The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper” airing at 10pm on Sunday, August 24.

“We know that the younger you start betting on sports, that leads to a higher likelihood of developing a gambling problem when they’re older,” Fong said.

That’s what happened to Ethan.

‘Anxious frenzy’
When Ethan was in college, sports gambling wasn’t yet legal, so he and his fraternity brothers used illegal sites to place bets.

In 2018, the Supreme Court ruled that states should decide whether to legalize sports betting. That marked a turning point for the industry, and it’s now legal in 38 states and Washington, D.C.

Suddenly, Ethan and others like him had access to several legal apps. That quickly escalated his addiction: He quit his near-six-figure sales job last August, determined to make sports betting his full-time gig.

Last September, he was doing what he did every morning, drinking coffee with his girlfriend and reviewing daily game predictions. This time he came across a sports betting influencer who boasted about winning game after game – and though Ethan didn’t usually fall for this type of content, he was intrigued by what seemed like hard proof. The influencer advertised his picks for five games that day.

“I bet $2,000 on each game and I lost every single one,” Ethan tells CNN.

Ethan spiraled into an “anxious frenzy.” The next day he placed a risky $10,000 bet on a Chicago Bears game and tried to hide the paralyzing fear from his girlfriend. Ethan managed to win $20,000 and get out of the red. He was relieved—and back in the game. The next few months were a blur of ups and downs, wins and losses.

Slowly, he realized he couldn’t even enjoy the wins amid all the anxiety.

The $11,000 loss on the Hurricanes-Flames hockey game in March was the end. He chose to officially “self-exclude” — banning himself from all sports betting through the apps, meaning he wouldn’t be able to log back in.

Shifting industry
Twenty years ago, the word “gambling” called to mind slot machines in Las Vegas and poker tables in Atlantic City: mostly older people, and maybe the occasional bachelorette party, playing in person.

Now, online gambling and sports betting have expanded that definition significantly. While casinos still represent most of the gambling industry’s profits, sports betting is exploding quickly: Revenue in that sector reached $13.7 billion in 2024, a 25% increase in just a year, according to the American Gaming Association.

On a good day, Eatts could catch 100 in the waters where he’s fished commercially for 15 years off South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula.

Since the harmful algal bloom began, his business, Cape Calamari, has gone “pretty much down to zero,” Eatts said.

While more mobile fish can move to cleaner waters during an algal bloom, invertebrates like shellfish and sea stars, and other species associated with the reef, are suffocated by toxic algae.

“We don’t know whether they’ve all died, or they’re just seeking refuge in deeper water, waiting for it all to clear,” he said.

Many fishers have lost their livelihoods overnight, with about a third of the state waters completely devoid of fish, according to Pat Tripodi, the executive officer of the Marine Fishers Association, which represents the interests of most commercial fishing license holders in the state.

“Wherever the algal bloom hits, there is zero life,” Tripodi said.

“It’s a really high emotional and mental strain on these individuals, because many of them don’t know how or if they will ever recover from it.”

Beyond the fishers themselves, the bloom is having a knock-on effect on the state’s seafood industry, which is valued at almost 480 million Australian dollars ($315 million).

Seafood processors, transport companies, grocers and restaurants are all feeling the pain, Tripodi said.

Eatts comes from a long line of fishers, and they’ve never seen anything like this.

The last time a harmful agal bloom swept South Australia was in 2014, but it was much more localized.

Toxic algal blooms are naturally occurring and are common around the world, including in the US. But climate change is making them more frequent and more severe.

The foundation for the South Australian bloom was laid back in 2022, experts believe, when catastrophic flooding swept the Murray, Australia’s longest river, washing extra nutrients into the Southern Ocean.

The next summer, currents brought nutrient-rich water to the surface in a process called cold water upwelling.

Then, a marine heatwave in September 2024 caused ocean temperatures to be about 2.5 degrees Celsius warmer than usual. That, combined with calm water conditions and light wind created conditions for the algae to grow and spread.
