A social thing
Kevin Vo, now 25, had never gambled before placing his first bet on basketball games through FanDuel three years ago. He had just secured his first job, in finance, and he had some money to play with. [https://trip-scan39.cc/ tripscan]

“I honestly fell into the peer pressure of my friends: like, literally all of them posting their parlays (on social media),” Vo said.

A parlay combines two or more individual bets into one, and all conditions must be met for the bettor to win money — a high-risk, high-reward strategy Vo found compelling.

Like Ethan, he watched games with friends who had all bet on the outcome and participated in group chats dedicated solely to the bets of the day. Vo’s casual pastime escalated in a matter of months.

“Every single day I would have a parlay,” Vo tells CNN.

Vo originally bet only on sports he knew well, but as he got deeper into the betting apps, he began putting money on options he knew nothing about. At one point he dove into Polish basketball, betting on games he couldn’t even watch.

“I was down a couple grand at one point. I was able to make it back. And then that all kind of fell down,” Vo said.

Vo spent months up and down with his wins and losses – and finally walked away when he was down only a few thousand and had just moved into his own apartment.

In an email to CNN, FanDuel outlined several ways it acts to prevent harmful gambling: the ability to set deposit limits and alerts, sending users a monthly statement with their financial status in the app, a review system triggered by activity like too many hours spent on the site or attempting to come back from big losses, and self-exclusion programs that include the offer of a free mental health assessment.

“We work to identify signs of harm and engage with the user to prevent that harm from happening,” said Cory Fox, FanDuel’s Senior Vice President of Public Policy and Sustainability.

DraftKings has similar safety measures in place, and it invites users to set limits with a pop-up page immediately when creating an account.

“These resources are introduced at sign-up and reinforced throughout the customer journey,” Lori Kalani, DraftKings Chief Responsible Gaming Officer, said in an email to CNN. “It’s more fun when it’s for fun—and that’s the experience we aim to deliver.”

4 space tourists splash down after traveling an orbit never attempted before [https://onpenoceam-finance.com/ openocean finance]

SpaceX is wrapping up the latest chapter in its commercial human spaceflight endeavors with the return of Fram2. The mission carried four passengers in a unique orbit around Earth that allowed humans to pass directly over the North and South poles for the first time.

Led by cryptocurrency billionaire Chun Wang, who is the financier of this mission, the Fram2 crew has been free-flying through orbit since Monday.
The group splashed down at 9:19 a.m. PT, or 12:19 p.m. ET, off the coast of California — the first West Coast landing in SpaceX’s five-year history of human spaceflight missions. The company livestreamed the splashdown and recovery of the capsule on its website.

During the journey, the Fram2 crew members were slated to carry out various research projects, including capturing images of auroras from space and documenting their experiences with motion sickness.

The ailment proved to be a significant issue for the crew, according to social media posts from Wang, who made his fortune with Bitcoin mining operations and is an avid traveler on Earth.
“The first few hours in microgravity weren’t exactly comfortable,” Wang said in a post on X, the social media platform owned by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. “Space motion sickness hit all of us — we felt nauseous and ended up vomiting a couple of times. It felt different from motion sickness in a car or at sea. You could still read on your iPad without making it worse. But even a small sip of water could upset your stomach and trigger vomiting.”

Fortunately, Wang added, “By the second morning, I felt completely refreshed.”

Wolves in Europe
Anti-wolf sentiment is growing elsewhere in Europe too.

A pony belonging to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s was killed by a wolf in 2022. She made a statement in 2023 saying that “the concentration of wolf packs in some European regions has become a real danger for livestock and potentially also for humans,” which prompted several wildlife and conservation charities, including the WWF, to issue a response, calling her words “misleading” and “not based on science.” [https://kra23c.cc/ kraken тор браузер]

Von der Leyen welcomed the news last month that the Bern Convention committee had decided to adjust the protection status of wolves, calling it “important news for our rural communities and farmers… because we need a balanced approach between the preservation of wildlife and the protection of our livelihoods.”

It’s true that the wolf population in Europe has increased over recent years. Wild Wonders’ Widstrand calls it “a major, fantastic comeback conservation story.”

There are approximately 1,500 wolves in Germany and 3,300 in Italy, according to conservation reports. Widstrand notes there are even 120 wolves in Belgium. “These countries are vastly smaller than Sweden and more densely populated,” he pointed out.

Yet rural affairs minister Kullgren says wolves are affecting Swedish society “more significantly than before.”
Kullgren said there were “parents who are afraid of letting their children play in their backyard, farmers who are afraid to let the animals out to graze due to the risk of wolf attacks and dog owners who are afraid that their beloved pets might get attacked while walking on forest paths.”

But Beatrice Rindevall, chairperson of the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, told CNN on Thursday that the government was scaring people unnecessarily and that there hadn’t been a wolf attack on a person since 1821.

“The government is very much adding fuel to the polarized debate,” she added.

Orrebrant, chair of the SCA, said that if the EU follows the Bern Convention committee’s decision, which comes into effect on March 7, and decides to downgrade the wolf’s protection status, “that will allow countries like Germany, Italy or Spain to hunt in the same way that Sweden does.”
