You hear it before you see it. Hundreds of all-terrain vehicles tearing across the desert, the roar of their engines echoing over the sand dunes. The noise goes all night long, making it impossible to grab any shuteye.

Not that anyone does.

“There is no sleep in Liwa,” says Ginger Krook, a 23-year-old motorsport enthusiast from the Netherlands. “It’s crazy.”

Each year, the Liwa International Festival draws crowds of car fanatics deep into the Empty Quarter, the vast desert stretching from the United Arab Emirates into Saudi Arabia.

Three hours’ drive from Abu Dhabi, the landscape is almost empty for most of the year, save for a new ribbon of blacktop and towering dunes.

In December, it becomes a dreamscape for motorheads.

“They come together and they drive,” says Krook, who plans to return for her fourth festival this December. “Everything you can think of related to off-road driving, you can find there.”

‘Full throttle or nothing’

Local Emiratis first recognized the motorsport potential of the Liwa Oasis more than two decades ago. They began gathering with their off-road vehicles at Moreeb Dune, the tallest in the region at more than 300 meters (about 1,000 feet). The challenge was simple: reach the top.

An official festival was created in 2004 and has grown steadily. In 2024, it drew more than 600,000 visitors, according to the event’s organizers. Alongside motorsports, a cultural program has taken shape, complete with fireworks each night.

But the central attraction — racing up the Moreeb Dune — remains the same.

“Everyone watches each other as they go up,” says Krook. “They are waiting for things to happen.”

Spectators cheer drivers on, but the dune is daunting. In Arabic, Moreeb means “terrifying.”

“If your tires are not big enough, your suspension is not good enough, you’re not able to come up,” she says. “You cannot be scared because it’s full throttle or nothing.”

Smaller, less terrifying dunes serve as obstacles in “dune-bashing” races, where cars and trucks dart and drift across the desert, leaving exhaust and plumes of sand in their wake.

It was “this kind of Mad Max-feeling city,” says Christian LeBlanc, 32, a Canadian influencer who attended last year. “There were these huge lights illuminating the dunes, and as we got closer you could see there were these (cars) driving up and down and up and down. We kept getting closer and closer, and (then) I could hear the chaos.”

But a profiler’s ultimate – and most elusive – goal is to recognize behavioral patterns and stop a crime before it even starts.

That was Molly Amman’s job at the Behavioral Threat Assessment Center within the FBI. Though she has since retired from the bureau and now works as a private consultant, Amman said that goal has never wavered.

“I’m in the business of prevention,” she said. “That’s all I do is try to assess, mitigate and prevent acts of targeted violence.”

Amman said her work focused on researching, analyzing and training the community to spot what the FBI calls “pre-attack behaviors” – the sometimes-subtle warning signs that a person could soon commit an act of violence.

Over the past four or so decades, Amman said, researchers have assembled “a picture of what we think more or less captures the universe of known pre-attack behaviors.”

Whether it’s a stalker, an active shooter, or a family annihilator, Amman said criminology researchers and the FBI have found that behaviors – like fixating on a perceived grievance or potential victim, or informing a third party of the intent to commit a violent crime – “hold true across multiple contexts of murder.”

“So now that we understand that, we are out training police departments and security people and school professionals – whoever we can get – on these pre-attack warning behaviors and what they mean.”

When a person of concern is flagged to law enforcement or consultants like Amman, they quickly assess the risk of imminent violence and look for ways to intervene to manage or reduce the threat, she said.

“The devil is in the details,” she said. “Some warning behaviors are more closely correlated with violence and even imminence of violence than others, and so that’s where your training comes into play.”

Options for intervention range from monitoring the person or hardening a target like a school, Amman said, or, in more extreme cases, invoking red flag laws or involuntarily committing someone.

But always, the goal is to intervene and interrupt the ramp-up to violence. And success is often inconspicuous.

“Your next question might be, ‘Well, how many times has that prevented violence?’ And my answer is always going to be, ‘I don’t know because we can’t prove what never happened,’” Amman said.

“My experience has been that … if we can identify those behaviors and recognize that this is someone who needs assistance … then we can change the course of events.

“And that’s what it’s all about.”

Boris says that they immediately felt at home in the area, and loved how walkable everything seemed to be.

“We didn’t need a car, because we could get anywhere by taxi,” he says. “Things like going grocery shopping, buying bread, going to a restaurant, getting a haircut…

“Everything was at my disposal. All within a block or two, or three blocks (at) the most. So that’s what we enjoyed.”

While Boris speaks Spanish and had picked up some Brazilian Portuguese during his first stint in the country, he was far from fluent.

However, he stresses that this wasn’t a huge barrier for him, and he was able to make friends relatively easily.
“There’s more community, it seems like,” says Boris. “Even though I don’t have relatives down here… People are friendlier to me.”

Boris goes on to explain that he finds Brazilians to be more relaxed and less money-focused.

“People are a little bit more laidback,” he says. “And it’s not as stressful as the United States, or the way people perceive us to be. Because everything is all about making money all the time.

“But here, it’s not about making money. It’s establishing other factors, like friendships.”

Boris points out that, while his grasp of the language has improved over time, he still struggles.

“It’s more colloquial…” he explains. “I mean, I could be standing there and somebody is having a conversation, and I can’t understand what they’re saying.

“But if they’re talking to me, I understand. So it’s a little funny that way.”
